Why baseball is just like the cleaning business

September 9, 2012 by Tom Watson

Why the cleaning business is just like baseball.Today we are going to talk about baseball.

Not about specific teams, baseball strategy or the latest scorers from around the league.

Instead we are going to chat about how baseball is just like the cleaning business in many ways.

Follow along with me on this one….

——————————————————————

In baseball, a batter comes up to the plate to face the opposing pitcher.

In the cleaning business the owner of a cleaning business goes to a meeting with the potential client.

——————————————————————

In baseball the opposing pitcher throws the ball to the batter in an attempt to make him miss.

In the cleaning business the potential client throws questions at the business owner in an attempt to see if they can help them solve their problem.

——————————————————————

In baseball, the batter swings at the opposing pitchers pitch in an attempt to hit the ball hard enough to get a hit.

In the cleaning business the cleaning business owner answers the question the potential client threw at them hoping to answer the question squarely and head on.

——————————————————————

In baseball sometimes the batter swings and misses on a pitch.

In the cleaning business sometimes an answer is not exactly what the potential client wanted to hear.

——————————————————————

In baseball the batter sometimes misses the ball three times and strikes out.

In the cleaning business sometimes the cleaning business owner swings and misses too, losing any chance for that person’s business.

——————————————————————

In baseball the batter gets more than one time at the plate.

In the cleaning business the cleaning business owner goes on many bids to many different companies.

——————————————————————

In baseball sometimes the batter swings and gets a single on his next time up at the plate.

In the cleaning business sometimes the cleaning business owner gets a small account on the next appointment netting them $250 month after all expenses.

——————————————————————

In baseball sometimes the batter hits a double.

In the cleaning business sometimes you land a larger account that puts $600 per month in their pocket after all is said and done.

——————————————————————

In baseball sometimes a batter hits a triple.

In the cleaning business sometime the cleaning business owner lands a highly profitable account that is low maintenance and close to their office plus it puts a $1,000 bucks in their pocket each month.

——————————————————————

In baseball sometimes the batter hits it out of the park.

In the cleaning business sometimes the cleaning business owner lands a giant cleaning account that nets them over $1,500 per month after expenses.

——————————————————————

In baseball sometimes the batter hits a grand slam.

In the cleaning business sometimes the cleaning business owner lands an account that puts over $2,000 dollars per month or more in their pocket after all expenses.

At the end of the day remember these six similarities…

One – You need to get to the plate in order to land an account.

Two – Sometimes you will strike out. That’s life!

Three – Sometimes you get a hit.

Four – The more you bat, the better you get. The better you get, the more extra base hits you get.

Five – Be happy with whatever comes your way.

Six – Keep getting to the plate.

Note: This post started out as a podcast (podcast 058). Though normally podcasts are a different subject matter than posts, I thought it worthwhile to include in the blog section as well.

And there is one major difference, in baseball both teams end up with dirty clothes. However in cleaning business your team becomes dirty but leaving your client in a shining home of office.
