If you want to start your own business, there is one habit you need to get rid of as fast as possible.
That habit is making excuses.
Now I know that may sound a little harsh, but it’s true.
There are a lot of words in the English language, but one of the most dangerous words in entrepreneurship is the word “if.”
It’s a tiny word. Just two letters.
But don’t let that fool you.
This one little word has probably buried more business dreams than people care to admit. Why? Because it gives people an easy way to explain away why they never got started, why they quit, or why they never got where they wanted to go.
It sounds like this:
If I had more money…
If I had better connections…
If I had more time…
If I was younger…
If I had more confidence…
If I had a better education…
If I had someone helping me…
If I could just catch a break…
You hear this kind of talk all the time.
The problem is, the word “if” feels harmless. It even sounds reasonable. That is exactly what makes it so dangerous.
It lets people off the hook.
It gives them a neat little explanation for why things didn’t work out. It helps them avoid the harder truth, which is this:
A lot of times success does not come down to perfect timing, perfect conditions, or perfect luck.
It comes down to whether or not you were willing to keep going when things got hard.
That is the real issue.
I am not saying people do not have obstacles. They do.
Some people have less money.
Some have less support.
Some have more fear.
Some have a rougher road than others.
That part is real.
But successful entrepreneurs are not usually the people with the easiest circumstances. They are the people who refuse to let circumstances be the final word.
That is a major difference.
Excuses Feel Safe… But They Keep You Stuck
The reason excuses are so deadly is because they remove responsibility.
And the moment you hand responsibility over to outside conditions, you also give away your power.
That is a bad trade.
Because once you convince yourself that your future depends on perfect circumstances, then you will spend your life waiting.
Waiting for more money.
Waiting for more confidence.
Waiting for a better opportunity.
Waiting for the fear to go away.
Waiting for somebody to come save you.
Meanwhile, the people who are actually succeeding are usually doing something much simpler.
They are taking action.
Not perfect action.
Not genius-level action.
Not fearless action.
Just action.
That is what moves people forward in business.
The Truth About Success In Business
Success in entrepreneurship is not about having no problems.
It is about solving problems.
That is really what business ownership is. You are constantly dealing with issues, setbacks, confusion, delays, disappointments, bad decisions, and unexpected headaches. That’s not a sign you are failing. That’s part of the game.
The people who win are the people who keep adjusting.
If one plan doesn’t work, they revise it.
If one angle falls flat, they try another.
If one door closes, they look for another door.
They do not sit there building a shrine to the word “if.”
They keep moving.
That’s why I always say a failed plan does not mean a failed person.
Sometimes your pricing is wrong.
Sometimes your marketing is weak.
Sometimes your presentation is poor.
Sometimes your timing is off.
Sometimes you simply need a better strategy.
Fine.
Fix it and keep going.
Too many people hit one setback and immediately start talking themselves out of the future they wanted.
That’s where they lose.
Real Entrepreneurs Don’t Wait To Feel Ready
Here is another mistake a lot of people make.
They think they need to feel fully confident before they begin.
That is almost never how it works.
Most people do not feel ready when they start a business.
Most do not feel brave.
Most do not feel certain.
Most do not feel polished.
They start anyway.
And that matters because confidence usually comes after action, not before it.
You gain confidence by doing.
You gain clarity by moving.
You gain strength by dealing with real problems.
Sitting still and overthinking everything usually does the opposite. It makes you weaker, not stronger.
So if you are waiting until you feel 100% ready, you may be waiting a very long time.
Stop Saying “If” And Start Asking Better Questions
One of the best things you can do as an entrepreneur is change the questions you ask yourself.
Instead of saying:
If I had more money…
ask
What can I do with what I have right now?
Instead of saying:
If I had more confidence…
ask
What action would help me build confidence?
Instead of saying:
If only I had help…
ask
What can I simplify, learn, or improve on my own today?
That is how business owners think.
They do not sit around worshipping excuses.
They focus on the next move.
That is a much healthier and much more profitable way to think.
Look At The People Who Refused To Quit
History is full of people who had every reason to stop.
Henry Ford was not some polished, privileged genius who had an easy road laid out in front of him. He had vision and persistence. He stayed focused and kept moving.
Thomas Edison failed over and over before he finally got results. Most people would have quit long before then. He kept going.
That is what separates winners from dreamers.
They stay with it.
They keep testing.
They keep learning.
They keep adjusting.
They keep pushing.
That is what entrepreneurship demands.
How To Beat Excuses And Build Real Momentum
If you want to overcome excuse-making, here are a few things that help:
- Make a decision.
A lot of people say they want success, but they have never fully decided to go after it. Decide first. - Expect problems.
If you expect business to be easy, you will be shaken every time something goes wrong. Problems are normal. - Focus on progress, not perfection.
You do not need a perfect plan. You need a workable one. - Watch your self-talk.
If you constantly tell yourself you can’t, you probably won’t. - Stay in motion.
Momentum covers up a lot of fear. Action has a way of clearing the fog.
Final Thoughts
There is an old saying that still holds up:
A quitter never wins and a winner never quits.
That does not mean you never change direction. It does not mean you never improve the plan. It means you do not let excuses become your identity.
So be careful with the word “if.”
It may sound harmless, but it has talked a lot of people out of building the life they wanted.
Replace it with stronger words.
I will.
I can.
I’ll figure it out.
I’m going to keep going.
That is the mindset that gives you a real chance.
At the end of the day, success still comes back to a simple formula:
Desire + Decision + Determination + Persistence = Success
Know what you want.
Decide that you’re going after it.
Stay determined when things get difficult.
And keep moving until you get there.
That is how entrepreneurs win.
