3 Simple Tips for Managing Cleaning Staff

3 Simple Tips for Managing Cleaning Staff in Your Cleaning Business

Let’s be honest. Dealing with staff can test your patience in a hurry. When you first start growing a cleaning business, you tend to think the hard part is getting customers. And yes, that part can be tough. But once you start bringing in employees, you quickly find out that managing people comes with a whole new set of headaches. Over the years I learned a few things the hard way. Here are three more tips that can help you deal with staff a little more effectively and with a lot less stress.

1 – Set the tone early.

A lot of problems with employees start because expectations were never made crystal clear in the beginning. Don’t assume people automatically know what you want just because it seems obvious to you. It may be obvious to YOU because it’s your business. But to them, it’s just a job they are learning as they go. So right from the start, lay out what matters most.

Show them what good work looks like. Explain how you want them to handle customers, supplies, security, time, and any problem that comes up on the job. The more clear you are up front, the fewer headaches you’ll have later. A lot of owners skip this step, then act surprised when workers do things their own way. If you don’t define the standard, somebody else will.

2 – Don’t ignore small problems.

This is a big one. Sometimes an employee starts showing little warning signs. Maybe they are showing up late now and then. Maybe they are cutting corners. Maybe they are getting lazy with details. Maybe their attitude is starting to slip. A lot of owners let these things slide because they don’t want confrontation. They hope the problem will fix itself. Most of the time, it doesn’t.

Small problems have a way of growing into big ones if you don’t deal with them early. That doesn’t mean you need to be nasty or overreact. It just means you need to address issues while they are still manageable. A simple conversation early on can save you a major mess later. The longer bad habits are allowed to continue, the harder they are to correct.

3 – Inspect what you expect.

You’ve probably heard that before, but it’s true. Never assume a job is being done right just because somebody said it was. Check behind people. Look at the work. Inspect the details. Follow up. This doesn’t mean you have to hover over employees every second of the day. But it does mean you need systems in place to make sure standards are being met.

If workers know you never check anything, some of them will start doing the bare minimum. That’s just human nature. When staff knows the work is going to be reviewed, it usually improves performance. People tend to pay more attention when they know somebody is going to actually look things over. The goal here is not to play “gotcha.” The goal is to protect your business, your customers, and your reputation.

Managing employees is not always easy. In fact, sometimes it can be one of the toughest parts of running a cleaning business. But if you set clear expectations, deal with problems early, and stay involved enough to monitor quality, you’ll put yourself in a much better position. Nobody gets this part perfect. I sure didn’t. But if you keep learning and stay consistent, you’ll get better at it over time.
