Learn how to fish, not how to eat fish.

September 10, 2011 by Tom Watson

The fastest way to succeed in the cleaning business or any business for that matter, is to completely immerse yourself in the education process.

This means dedicating the time needed to study what you don’t know. I mean that just kinda makes sense, yet many people forget that fact.

Remember High School? You had to study to pass right? Well owning a business is very similar except you are graded a little differently in the real world. You don’t get an A, B, C, D or F based on your performance.

In the real world you get paid in “Greenbacks”.

The more you excel at your craft, the more money you earn. The great part about this payment model is the fact that it’s never been easier to learn so much so fast. Just consider the website you are on right now. Cleaning 4 Profit didn’t even exist a few years ago.

So this leaves no excuses as to why you can’t learn what you need to in order to succeed in the cleaning business. You don’t even have to leave your home anymore in most cases.

I was motivated to touch on this topic because I’ve been contacted by many people who want to skip the whole “education process”. They just want me to “get them cleaning contracts”.

This of course is not possible as the only way to get cleaning contracts is to get them yourself. While there are several companies out there that “claim” to get them for you, they don’t deliver. It’s simply not possible, and the companies that offer this service are selling snake oil.

What is more troubling is the fact that new business owners want to take the “easy” way out and just have someone (anyone for that matter) get the cleaning contacts for them. I do feel sorry for them nonetheless.

While I certainly don’t mind lending someone a helping hand, I won’t do their homework for them. This scenario reminds me of the old Chinese proverb…

“If you give a man a fish you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime”

Obviously it is better to teach someone how to do something than to do it for them. While I’ll concede giving someone a fish is good for the short term, it is certainly much better to teach them how to do it so that in the long term they can take care of themselves.

At Cleaning 4 Profit we don’t serve fish platters, we teach you how to fish!

The vast majority of people know this of course. I guess some people just want to take a shortcut. But like I mentioned earlier, there are no shortcuts to success. You need to put the time and effort to make it work. When you do, success will find you!
