Great quotes by Warren Buffet (and the lessons they provide).

May 20, 2011 by Suzanna Watson

Warren Buffet is one of the richest men in the world, yet he lives by a rather simple philosophy.

I may be paraphrasing it a bit, but his philosophy goes like this…don’t make things harder than they are and just keep it simple.

I don’t think it could be said any better. In just about any thing you’ll do in life, anything you want to excel at anyway, you need to master the basics as much as possible and throw in a dash of common sense.

If you can do that you will have success over the long haul. This is because success can be broken down into smaller tasks that anyone can accomplish. The goal of starting a cleaning business should never be “lets see how hard we can make it”.

No…you need to keep it as simple as possible as that is the only way to build a company that is easy to manage and operate. Besides, the more complicated it gets, the less fun it becomes.

Anyway…I really like this man. You know what I admire the most about him? The fact that he is not very materialistic. In fact he drives an old car and lives in the same house he bought years ago (and its not a mansion).  He once said “there is nothing material I want very much”. Wow, most people are the exact opposite don’t you think.

So now lets hear some words of wisdom from the one and only Warren Buffet. Keep in mind that I tried to pick the quotes that would resonate with owning your own business and not just the investor world. Here we go…

1 – “In the business world, the rear view mirror is always clearer than the windshield”.

2 – “Only when the tide goes out do you discover who’s been swimming naked”.

3 – “Chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken”.

4 – “Price is what you pay. Value is what you get”.

5 – “Rule No.1: Never lose money. Rule No.2: Never forget rule No.1”.

6 – “Wall Street is the only place that people ride to work in a Rolls Royce to get advice from those who take the subway”.

7 – “The business schools reward difficult complex behavior more than simple behavior, but simple behavior is more effective”.

8 – “There seems to be some perverse human characteristic that likes to make easy things difficult”.

9 – “Time is the friend of the wonderful company, the enemy of the mediocre”.

10 – “Your premium brand had better be delivering something special, or it’s not going to get the business”.

11 – “You do things when the opportunities come along. I’ve had periods in my life when I’ve had a bundle of ideas come along, and I’ve had long dry spells. If I get an idea next week, I’ll do something. If not, I won’t do a damn thing”.

12 – “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently”.

13 – “It’s better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behavior is better than yours and you’ll drift in that direction”.

My personal favorite is # 3. I’ve really never heard anyone describe it that way before yet it is so true. Tell me what you think in the comments below.
