I think most people would agree we must be thankful for all that we have, and be willing to share it with others in some small way.
Now what’s one way that could be accomplished? How about the simple act of recognizing someone. There is a saying that goes “Being recognized is good for the ego, recognizing someone else is good for the soul”.
Always be ready to give encouragement and to help someone who is struggling. Becoming a good listener is showing genuine interest and curiosity about the person you are talking with.
I remember meeting a wonderful man, he was a neighbor of mine and a school principal. When you had a conversation with him, he listened to you so intently it was as if you were the only person in the world at that moment.
He really made me feel important. He has since passed away, but I will always remember him for his gift of truly listening to what someone had to say. The best leaders acknowledge the wants and need of the people they are leading. They adapt their actions to different situations.
In owning your own business you will come across many many individuals, whether it be a customer, a supply vendor or employee. They will all need your recognition in one way or another. This means you will need to step up to the plate and deliver it at some point.
The two simple words, “Thank You” really go a long way in business. Thank your customers, thank your vendors and especially thank your employees because without them you are nowhere.
If a customer calls to tell you what a good job your crew is doing, make sure you pass that message onto them. This recognition will go a long way in making their day. When a vendor helps you out, even it its just some information, thank him. And always, always let your customers know how much you appreciate them.
Sometime your customers will ask you to donate to a charity they are helping out with. If they do ask you for your support, just do it. Even if it is a small amount, it shows you care and are “recognizing their effort”. If an employee has a life changing event, marriage, birth, illness. Acknowledge it in some small way, even if it’s just a card of some kind as it shows you care.
In the business world we often must think with our heads, but to be truly successful we must also think with our hearts too. In some ways recognition is like a “High Five”, so give it freely and give it often.
